ABOUT US
OUR MISSION
Recollection is a collaborative history project. We work with Kentucky’s diverse communities to archive stories about the places that shape us.
STORY. PLACE. HISTORY.
Every person and every community has a story to tell. Stories are powerful. They engage us and create space for dialogue. Stories connect us to the places we live in and the communities we live with.
We focus on the intersection of story and place.
History shapes us. It is a part of our identity. There are always new stories to discover that evolve and change how we view the world around us. History can be found in unassuming places, or perhaps a building that looks nothing like it did in the past. Important history is even in places that seem forgotten.
We connect the past to the present, creating a digital archive.
TOO OFTEN, HISTORIC PRESERVATION HAPPENS TO COMMUNITIES INSTEAD OF WITH COMMUNITIES.
Who gets to write history?
Through our cultural documentation, we aim to advocate for places at the local level. When communities become the primary authors of their community narratives, it creates a shift in power. Communities can tell the powers that be what places are of cultural value. Personal stories can have much more impact than written policy. They can also change minds, cultivate interest, and create change.
